Fela Comes To Broadway, Jay-z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith Back Show

This news truly surprised and amazed me! I am so excited and grateful that now the world will better know one of our greatest musical artists of all-time, Fela, thanks to a wonderful group of people including Hip Hop Legends and Movie Stars, Jay-z, Will and Jada!

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have officially signed on as co-producers of "Fela!," a musical about Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti that opens Monday (November 23) on Broadway.

The news confirms weeks of speculation that the three would back the show.
A representative for "Fela!" did not specify the amount of the celebrities' investment, but their endorsement alone gives the musical's profile a significant boost just a week before its premiere.

"There's going to be an enormous incentive for people to investigate Fela when they know that Jay-Z and Will Smith are all rabid fans," Rikki Stein, Kuti's former co-manage
r and executor of his estate, recently told Billboard. "It's a sign that the underground is moving overground."

"Fela!" will help find a larger audience for the music of Kuti, who pioneered Afrobeat from the sounds of James Brown and West African high-life music, became a political icon in his native Nigeria and earned the admiration of everyone from Paul McCartney to the Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil before his death in 1997.

"I have an abiding regret that Fela never achieved the recognition he deserved during his lifetime," Stein said. "We have a long row to hoe in terms of general knowledge and acceptance."

In addition to green-lighting "Fela!," Kuti's estate has licensed his catalog to the newly revived Knitting Factory Records. The well-timed deal will result in the reissue of Kuti's complete catalog -- 45 albums -- during the next 12 years.

"The industry always talks about who the next big legacy artist will be," said Ian Wheeler, label manager of Knitting Factory Records. "It should have been Fela years ago. We're really trying to bring a new audience around the world, and particularly in the U.S., to his music."

Up first is the October 27 release "The Best of the Black President," a compilation of Kuti's best-known material. The set is being sold at previews of "Fela!" and at Felabrations, a series of Afrobeat DJ parties organized by Knitting Factory Records and its marketing partner, Giant Step.

LOST IN THE SHUFFLE

MCA reissued Kuti's catalog in 2001, but Bernstein, who helped market that series, said its potential wasn't fully realized. "MCA was a major label, and no matter how much they said they loved Fela and how important he was, he was definitely lost in the shuffle," he said.

Stein is all too familiar with labels' conflicted admiration for Kuti. In the mid-'80s, he said he met with every major about a potential deal. "They all received me respectfully and saw Fela as akin to Miles Davis or any of the jazz greats," Stein recalls. "But they'd ask: 'Rikki, which three minutes of this 18-minute song do you want me to put on the radio?'"

"I'd ask Fela to write me a small tune," Stein added. "He used to say, 'I'm writing African classical music. Don't mess with Tchaikovsky.'"

A deal nearly came to fruition in 1993, when then-Motown Records president Jheryl Busby offered Kuti a five-album deal under his new Africa-oriented label, with a $1.3million advance for each album and another $1 million for full ownership of Kuti's catalog, Stein said. But after talking to his spirit advisers, Kuti refused to sign until April 1995. Busby left Motown the week of the scheduled signing, and Andre Harrell's first action as Motown's new president was to ax the African label.

"Fela!" re-creates the Shrine -- the Lagos, Nigeria, nightclub where Kuti played multiple nights each week with his band, Africa 70. Singers, dancers and musicians perform Kuti songs including "Shakara," "Zombie" and "Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense" behind lead actor Sahr Ngaujah, who has won an Obie Award for his spot-on portrayal of Kuti in the show's Off Broadway run last year. The effect is less stuffy theater than raucous concert -- just as its creators intended.

"The Broadway experience can be like sitting with blinders on," "Fela!" director/choreographer Bill T. Jones said. "This is a show you enjoy as much with your body as with your mind. It's free and communal."

"There was a constant struggle between keeping Fela's music pure and deconstructing it for the audience," said the show's musical director, Aaron Johnson, who translated Kuti's Yoruba and pidgin lyrics and is also the conductor/trombonist of the acclaimed Afrobeat band Antibalas. "I've been very pleasantly surprised with the response so far."

Nor have the most controversial aspects of Kuti's life been smoothed over, from his simultaneous "wedding" to 27 women to his clashes with the Nigerian government that led to a brutal 1977 attack on his compound, which he called the Kalakuta Republic. "It's all out there," Stein said. "Fela has not been sanitized."

And there's further proof that a Kuti revival of sorts is under way: A screenplay for a biopic is in the works, to be directed by the U.K. filmmaker Steve McQueen ("Hunger").

"I believe that with the show, the film and the reissues, a lot is going to change," Stein said. "We'll see a much wider audience for Fela. There were a million people at his funeral shouting, 'Fela will live forever.' Of course, they were right."

Rihanna's Russian Roulette Music Video...Astounding!

This is a great music video, so compelling! Nowadays most music videos don't really convey the song, they're used to just sell the artist and not the music, the music is often crap anyway. But, this video indeed tells a story of the dangers of toxic relationships for both parties. The setting, the imagery is very artistic. I think Rihanna did a great job in expressing what she was feeling through this video and serves as an excellent cautionary tale!

Taylor Swift Wins Big at CMA Awards 2009

Taylor Swift, Fearless, 19 and Entertainer of The Year

Taylor walked away with Country Music's biggest wins much to the surprise of Taylor and Country Music fans, including Best Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of The Year, Entertainer of The Year! She unseated three-time winner Carrie Underwood (Best Female Vocalist of the Year) and four-time winner Kenny Chesney (Entertainer of the Year) at this year's 43rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

Some may feel this is all too much too soon, but it's the times we live in, instant gratitification. It went from sympathy votes to domination for the Kanye West VMAs incident, where he interrupted her acceptance speech and the rest is history. Ironically, it was in 2006 that Faith Hill was called a "sore loser" by some because cameras showed her saying "what" to Carrie Underwood winning her first Best Female Artist of The Year Award, fresh off of American Idol. Faith Hill vehemently disputed this was the case and stated Carrie was talented and deserving. American Idol catapulted Underwood into an instant superstar virtually overnight and three years later, 2009 gave us a very young country music entertainer of the year, the youngest ever and only the second woman to win this award. History has a way of repeating itself!

We have to brace ourselves as we the acceleration of fame and glory steadily increase and become commonplace, some deserving and others maybe not so much. I feel Taylor deserved the awards because they were given for more than reasons based on talent and performance. It was also a solidarity move, I'm sure Country Music felt somewhat of a snub by Kanye West's actions that Taylor wasn't deserving of the VMAs Best Female of Year Award and Beyonce was better suited. It's about respecting all music genres, even if it's not your preference. So Taylor, enjoy!

Carrie Underwood Play On...Looking and Sounding Great...

Carrie Underwood has returned with Play On and performed on Good Morning America. She looked great and love her voice. Play On features some really good songs, "Undo it," "Songs Like This," "Casanova Cowboy" She keeps growing, never one to rest on her current status quo. American Idol made her a star and her strong work ethic and artistry has kept her a star and Country Music's Entertainer of the Year!

Here's a customer review from Amazon.com

"Not since Shania Twain bared her midriff, and gained legions of fans outside of the country music scene, has there been a disc that blatantly wears its intentions on its (album) sleeve. Literally, the songwriting and producing credits are littered with a who's who of names that are ruling the charts in every genre. And with a longer listening, this album has to be Underwood's most focused. The melodies are smoother, "This Time" with its stuttering drum just below the mix and harmony is just so breezy and effective it leaves you with no choice but to tap your toes and sing-along to the chorus.

But that is what the whole album is built on, an inner arena feeling. It has a much fuller sound than carnival ride. It's grander, and oozing in bombast, "Cowboy Casanova" & "Songs Like This" give you just enough fiddle and twang to satisfy without purely catering to a pop audience. With such stellar production it is almost too easy to ignore the real star in all of this: Carrie Underwood. Her vocals and interpretation has grown, shockingly, from her last disc, which found her range expanding. "Someday When I Stop Loving You" & "Temporary Home," brings to mind the best of Martina McBride, heartbreaking beauty at its best.

Carrie Underwood is going for an even broader radio sound, but who isn't in country music today. Yes, there are a bigger array of genre bending producers that bring elements of R&B, Rock, etc., but it works so brilliantly that you can't fault her for it. If Underwood wasn't delivering such honest delivery and conviction this would be a four star disc, but she brings so much to the table vocally that is impossible to not feel that she has given her all to this project, you can feel her pushing for you to enjoy this disc. There is a faith and purity to this woman's delivery that brings to mind the best artists from Cline to Womack (who's latest CD isn't garnering as much attention as it deserves). Country music -- heck, music in general needs her."

"Empire State of Mind" Video

This is a great video with plenty of heart and soul! Jay-z has simply slayed in 2009!

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys - "Empire State of Mind" - Yankee Stadium

Jay-z and Alicia Keys did a great job, maybe it even helped the Yankees to defeat Philly in this World Series Game, just saying! The crowd was hyped and Alicia's vocals sounded great, without any strain, Jay-z was in his usual impeccable zone! Great for the city of New York, a year commemorating the 10th year anniversary of 9/11. Go New York!

Album Review: LeToya Luckett - Lady Love

By Samantha Greaves
R&B Music Examiner

LeToya Luckett's Lady Love in stores August 25th.LeToya Luckett returns with her brand new album Lady Love and offers an array of songs that will complement the music lover in everyone.

Following-up with her last effort LeToya that has been certified platinum by the RIAA, Lady Love is sure to be the perfect sophomore album for R&B fans that have been pining away at receiving music worth pressing play.

The album opens up with the track "Lady Love" that shares it's name with the album. The beat on the track is fast-pumping and hypnotic allowing the ears to soak up the ever-changing beat all the while witnessing LeToya's voice float on the track like a light-weight feather. "She Ain't Got" plays on a Pop meets R&B feel while "Lazy" will more than likely be one of the ladies anthem for 2009.

The fan favorite "Regret" featuring Ludacris, that seems to follow a similar beat pattern of Gospel duo Mary Mary's song "God In Me", allows the Houston-native to have a little fun with her voice effortlessly hitting high notes. One of the gems on Lady Love is "Take Away Love" featuring the English-sensation Estelle. The track has a tinge of classic R&B embedded in the melody and has chart-topping potential as a single."Love Rollercoaster" featuring Mims caps the album off displaying LeToya riding the harmonized beat going toe-to-toe vocally as rapper Mims keeps up lyrically.

Lady Love embodies the sounds of the present with just a splash of R&B that reigned supreme in the 90's. The tracks are very diverse and range from party songs to late-night soft ballads playing on not just love but also heartbreak and break-ups. The album shows LeToya's ability to think out the box and to bring to R&B music something different than the vast majority. Lady Love is an ideal album to add to your R&B collection.

Stand Out Tracks: "I Need A U", "Over", "Lady Love", "She Ain't Got" and "Take Away Love".

LeToya Luckett's Lady Love is due in stores August 25th, 2009.

Alicia Keys - New Music Video

I like this video, the song has a message as with all of her music. "Doesn't Mean A Thing" is on her fourth studio recording, The Element of Freedom, it drops 12/1, World AIDS Day. It may sound familiar, but it's the words that really matter. So many have it all or just everyday people, who want to share, but maybe made the wrong choice. Everyone won't be in love and loved, but we can all dream about it, keep hoping. That's what Alicia Keys sings about, having it and losing it, something a lot of us can relate!

Mariah Carey "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel"

Mariah Carey - New Music!!!Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel Review

By Alicia Sanders

Mariah Carey is back again and this is one of her best offering. It's intimate, sensual and displays a personal Mariah singing about love and all it's beauy and pain! This top-charting artist has weathered many storms, but she proves she's a winner! I love just about all the songs on this CD. My favorites are H.A.T.E. U., "Standing O," "It's A Wrap," "Angels Cry," "I Want to Know What Love Is" and others. While all the controversy over the Obsessed" with rapper Eminem and spectators wondered if Mariah had seen her best days in today's disposable music industry, she proves that real talent doesn't disappear and people just want some good old fashioned real music and they'll buy it! Well, I think this CD should put doubts to bed that Mariah Carey is a shining star who still has a long way to go! She looks great, a husband, loyal fans and a role in the film "Precious" that's arousing a serious buzz at film festivals to be released in November. I can't wait and if this is a sign of the mileage left in Mariah's swag, then haters will have to move on to the next celebrity bashing because Mimi has spoken.
